How to Create a Relaxing Night Time Routine

As moms, we know all about bedtime routines for our little ones. We ensure they have their baths, brush their teeth, read a story, and get tucked into bed with care. But here’s the question: What about us? Where’s the wind-down moment after a long day of juggling work, kids, and the never-ending to-do list? If your idea of “me time” is falling asleep scrolling through your phone or binging the newest series on Netflix, then it’s time to reclaim your evenings with a nighttime routine that actually relaxes and refreshes you.

Here’s how you can create a peaceful, relaxing night routine that helps you unwind and feel rejuvenated by the time your head hits the pillow.

1. Set the Mood

Before diving into the “what” of your routine, start with the “where.” Think about your space: does your bedroom or bathroom feel like a peaceful escape, or more like a cluttered storage unit? You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect space, but a clean, calm environment does wonders for your mindset. Light a candle, dim the lights, or even play some soothing music to signal to your brain that it’s time to relax. You deserve a sanctuary, even if it’s just for 15 minutes! I love a good acoustic version of my favourite songs.

2. Unplug (Seriously)

This one is tough for a lot of us, but essential. Phones, TV, and other screens may seem relaxing, but they actually stimulate your brain, making it harder to settle down. Try unplugging from your devices at least 30 minutes before bed. Instead, opt for something more calming, like reading a light book, journaling, or just sitting in quiet reflection. Your mind needs this time to slow down. Need some journaling prompts? Check the Instagram feed.

3. Create a Soothing Skincare Routine

Skincare is self-care, mama! Taking just a few minutes for a skincare routine can be a wonderful way to nurture yourself. It doesn’t have to be elaborate; cleanse, moisturize, maybe a little serum or facial oil—anything that feels like you’re pampering yourself. The physical act of caring for your skin can also help signal to your mind that the day is coming to an end, allowing you to unwind further.

4. Indulge in a Mini Wind-Down Ritual

Pick a small, soothing activity that you can look forward to each night. This could be as simple as sipping on a warm cup of tea (hello, chamomile or lavender!), doing some gentle stretches, or practicing deep breathing. These little moments of relaxation will help calm your nervous system, especially after a chaotic day of mom-ing and working. Bonus: Your body will start to associate these cues with bedtime, helping you fall asleep faster.

5. Reflect and Release

You’ve been holding a lot all day long—physically, mentally, and emotionally. Give yourself a moment to release it. One way is to grab a journal and write down your thoughts, worries, or even your wins for the day (aka a brain dump). Another option is a quick gratitude practice—writing three things you’re grateful for can help shift your mindset to something positive before bed. By acknowledging your thoughts and emotions, you can let them go for the night and allow your mind to rest.

6. Be Consistent

Let’s face it—nailing a nighttime routine probably won’t happen on the first try, especially if you’re used to going to bed in “mom mode.” But consistency is key. Even if you can only manage to do part of your routine some nights, keep at it. Over time, your body and mind will begin to associate these calming activities with bedtime, and you’ll find yourself falling asleep faster and waking up more refreshed.

Why a Nighttime Routine Matters for Moms

As moms, we are always caring for everyone else—our kids, partners, even our coworkers or friends. But making time to care for yourself in a meaningful way, especially at the end of the day, can make a world of difference in your mental health, mood, and energy levels. You’re setting the tone for tomorrow by taking care of you tonight.

It’s time to start treating yourself with the same care and attention you give your kiddos at bedtime. You deserve rest. You deserve relaxation. And most of all, you deserve to wake up feeling like you💜
